300 Named Hollywood Flick of the Year, Spartans Dines in Hotel Ballroom
The Big Picture
October 24, 2007
One of the more overwhelming success stories of 2007 has been the ride enjoyed by 300.
Clearly a summer blockbuster that studio analysts thought couldn't compete with Transformers, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean and others (or else, why would it be released in March?), 300 was named 2007 movie of the year at the 11th Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Awards, according to Variety.
The awards also honored Richard Gere, Marion Cotillard, John Travolta, Jennifer Connelly, Ellen Page and Casey Affleck for acting; Ben Affleck and Marc Forster for directing; and the cast of Hairspray for ensemble acting.
While these awards have virtually no bearing on the Academy Awards - don't expect 300 to vie for Best Picture or John Travolta for Best Supporting Actor...at least, I hope not - it does tip the hat to giant Hollywood movies done good and done well.
Variety has a complete list of the winners, even deving into the international awards.
