Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes at these big awards shows? Wonder no more: MTV News' nosy reporters were hard at work all day and night, taking notes, taking snaps and taking names ...
(Watch Cameron Diaz and Eva Mendes getting ready backstage, and chill with Bruce Willis and "High School Musical" castmembers, right here.)
Rihanna walked the red carpet in a long, flowing gown. A member of her female entourage stepped on her train, abruptly stopping the singer in her tracks. Rihanna turned around and said "Muthaf----!" before catching herself and laughing it off. They continued walking. ...
DeRay Davis from "Wild 'N Out" looked like he was trying to push up on Mandy Moore. They said hi and, as she walked away, he said, "You're so beautiful, damn." She just smiled. ...
Sacha Baron Cohen, who has had his fair share of comedic success lately, wanted to be among the first to congratulate "Knocked Up" star Seth Rogen on the film's strong opening weekend. "How are you handling it?" he asked Rogen backstage. Letting loose one of his trademark staccato laughs, Rogen looked at his female companion and replied, "It's easy. We don't go out much." ...
Later, Rogen was heard commenting on the fashion he kicked for the evening. It wasn't Versace or Calvin Klein: "I'm going with schlubby Jew," he was overheard telling Baron Cohen backstage. "I just can't escape it." Naturally, that jackhammer laugh punctuated the joke. ...
Ever wonder what do stars do during a live show's commercial breaks? As the house announcement boomed "You all have five minutes before we shut the doors again!", sexy "Grudge 2" star Arielle Kebbel made a mad dash for the ladies' room — just in time to be greeted by a 12-lady-deep line. But give her credit: Rather than pull a diva routine, Kebbel stood at the back of the line in her high heels and flesh-colored dress. Her male companion looked nervous after emerging from the men's room and, sure enough, Arielle's decision to wait in line made her miss re-admittance. But as her man greeted her with a drink and a smile, she didn't seem to mind. ...
That house announcer wasn't kidding: The guards at the venue wouldn't even let daunting "300" star Gerard Butler back in after he (presumably) ducked out for a bathroom visit. He used the time to talk with fans and pose for pictures. ...
Tobin Bell might be the demented killer at the heart of "Saw," but he seemed positively tame as he sat with his arm around his grandson, sharing a bottle of water. ...
We caught Will Ferrell backstage, taking in the show, slapping high fives with his entourage. Angela and Vanessa Simmons stood outside near Ferrell, just looking pretty. ...
Overheard: Kebbel talking with Aaron Yoo from "Disturbia" about his new flick. Sounds like they've got a date to hang out in New York soon. ...
Andy Signore, director of Best Spoof winner "United 300," was caught handing Gerard Butler his business card, and asking that his short film be included on the "300" DVD. Butler made a big show about refusing his request, camping it up theatrically. As the nervous filmmaker buckled, Butler broke into a big smile and shook his hand, saying he enjoyed the short film. ...
On the red carpet, "300" director Zack Snyder was giving interviews when he was suddenly approached by a fellow nominee who shared his love for swords and sandals: Signore. "Hi Zack, I'm Andy Signore, director of 'United 300'," said the aspiring filmmaker. After a beat, Snyder's face lit up. "Dude, your movie is hilarious. Somebody I know forwarded it to me, and I couldn't stop laughing." After a minute more of conversation, the starstruck young filmmaker made the slickest of all red carpet moves: His shaky hand slipped Snyder a business card. ...
You meet all kinds standing near the concession stand at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. "Dude, can we buy your pass?" a shaggy-haired 20-something guy asked a reporter. As he and friend sipped their beers, the all-access aspirants started throwing out numbers. "Seriously, we'll give you $400 right now!" As they walked away to find another target, we couldn't help but be reminded that this really is the hottest ticket in town. ...
More red-carpet moments: Tyrese Gibson greeting Paris Hilton on the red carpet, telling her to "hang in there." ... Three 6 Mafia saying "What's up?" to Josh Duhamel, then greeting MTV News' Sway and his daughter, Kiyomi. ... "Shrek" stars Cameron Diaz and Mike Myers give a quick kiss hello and spoke with SuChin before the show (during the ceremony, Diaz presented with Myers with the MTV Generation Award). ... Former "Saturday Night Live" comic Horatio Sanz stopping to snap pictures of Kevin Smith and Victoria Beckham on the red carpet. ... Speaking of whom, Kevin Smith was wearing the most interesting outfit: a trenchcoat with shorts and Vans. He did interviews holding a lit cigarette, taking puffs in between. ... Samuel L. Jackson stopping to meet Sway's little girl as well. ... Diaz saying "What's up!" to Meagan Good on the carpet. Mike Myers walked by, and Cam and her entourage followed him inside the theater. ...
In the green room, Nelly's "Hot in Herre" played while Robin Williams — wearing a kilt — yelled out "Pole dance!" Thankfully, he didn't do one. Later, as he and Bruce Willis posed for pictures, Williams said (in a thick Scottish accent), "Last year we went to see 'The Queen' but the only person who came out was Helen Mirren." ...
Jack Nicholson is the man! He talked to Cameron Diaz for several minutes before they were joined by Adam Sandler and then Williams — and then Michael Chiklis. Nicholson told him he didn't want to overdress for the night and appreciated that Chiklis wore a T-shirt (with a jacket, of course). ...
After the show, Michael Chiklis took a photo of his daughters posing with Amanda Bynes. Later, Amanda talked with friends and did a great British accent while she reenacted meeting Amy Winehouse. Bynes joked that their encounter was brief because they both had to go in different directions during the show. ...
It's always interesting to see what happens when two mega-stars collide. Backstage, Willis enjoyed a moment of peace on a walkway — until Paris Hilton and her entourage came stampeding toward him. As the cameras snapped, Paris gave Willis a quick nod but kept on walking. Willis simply took a step back to get out of her way and did not acknowledge the nod. ...
After winning his Best Fight award, Gerard Butler became arguably the most popular photo-op for the stars. Backstage during the show, "Stomp the Yard" star Columbus Short pushed his way across the crowded green room party to get his chance to meet King Leonidas. "Man, I've got to get a picture with you," Short insisted, handing his camera to a friend nearby. Butler, all smiles, put his arm around the young actor, who added: "I'm a huge fan of '300,' man." ...
An unexpected "Jackie Brown" reunion broke out backstage at the MTV Movie Awards, when Chris Tucker ran into his old buddy Samuel L. Jackson. "Gimme a holler tomorrow," Tucker said to Jackson after they posed for some pictures and caught up. The randomness went to another level when "Borat" funnyman Ken Davitian popped up behind them both, telling Tucker: "I tried so hard to get into your last film!" Laughing, Tucker responded, "I wish you had, man!" ...
"This is Brett Ratner's brother," beamed Eva Mendes, introducing her friends to the kid kin of the "Rush Hour 3" director. Moments later, the "Ghost Rider" star posed with the excited little kid and his twice-as-excited little girlfriend. The duo were a huge hit backstage, getting their photos taken with Dane Cook, John Travolta, Robin Williams and Shia LaBeouf — all of whom couldn't resist when the insistent kids ran up to them. As a fatigued babysitter tried to keep up, foulmouthed funnyman Cook did his best to keep it G-rated. "Oh look at you," he smiled. "You're adorable. Nice to meet you." After the photo, however, he couldn't help but send them off with a bit of his trademark sarcasm. "Enjoy the rest of your evening, folks. Don't party too hard!" ...
Justin Long partied backstage in the green room toward the tail end of the event, but admitted Paris made him a little uncomfortable. "I turned 29 yesterday, but I have yet to go through puberty," he was overheard saying. "This is always weird, and completely unfamiliar to me." ...
Paris, however, felt right at home posing for the rabid paparazzi alongside her private car after the awards. "I could do this all day," she grinned, striking her famous hip-throwing picture pose. The flashes kept popping as she jetted off. ...
The best celebrity-sighting spot of the entire night may have been the limo line out back of the Gibson Amphitheatre. Eva Mendes and John Krasinski stood by alongside Amanda Bynes, while civilians (a.k.a. VIPs and publicists) tried to find their rides home. As a wrangler barked out celebrity names through a bullhorn, Justin Long screamed back, "Gerard Butler? Yeah, that's me!"; Kevin Smith kept smoking cigarettes; and in the middle of it all, a candid moment between Arielle Kebbel and Jon Voight turned into the bizarre photo opportunity of John Travolta, Voight and Tyrese together. Krasinski walked past Long and teased, "Hey, it's that Mac guy!" while Tobin Bell discovered a horrific scene of his own: "I'm seeing a huge line of cars," he reported sullenly into his cell phone. When all was said and done, the best idea belonged to people like Voight and Three 6 Mafia, who took golf-cart rides to vehicles they had cleverly stashed in the adjoining Universal Studios parking lots. ...
Indeed, the coolest exit may have belonged to Josh Duhamel, who headed off into the sunset in a golf cart, riding shotgun with girlfriend Fergie on his lap.
