Vampire-slayer ... Gerard Butler is to star in Priest.
Gerard Butler is in talks to play a warrior priest who hunts down vampires in a new film by Andrew Douglas, who made his debut on last year's remake of The Amityville Horror.
Provisionally titled Priest, the film is described as a post-apocalyptic horror western and is based on a comic book by Min-Woo Hyung.
The film is being developed by Sony and has raised eyebrows in some quarters because the studio has only recently given the green light to another comic book-based vampire tale, 30 Days of Night, which is set to star Josh Hartnett.
In Priest, Butler's character ignores church authorities to set off on a mission to save his niece from a band of renegade vampires with the help of a young sheriff and a priestess.
30 Days of Night centres on a husband and wife sheriff team in an isolated Alaskan town, which is placed under threat from vampires each year when the sun sinks below the horizon for an entire month. The film is set to start shooting in early August in New Zealand.
Butler will next be seen in the period piece 300, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel about warring tribes in ancient Greece, and recently wrapped the kidnapping thriller Butterfly on a Wheel.
