WHO'S YOUR STYLE ICON?
Nominate the Scots star you believe has the most inspirational dress scnce

FROM the rock glamour of our female music stars to the suave and sophisticated cool of a certain grey-haired 75-year-old, Scots have always cut a dash on the style scene.

And now, the Daily Record wants your help to name Scotland's greatest and most inspirational fashion icon.

The winner will be announced at the first Scottish Fashion Awards, which will honour the leading lights of our style and design industries.

The glittering awards ceremony will be held at Stirling Castle on May 7 and will b e hosted by TV presenter Jenni Falconer.

As well as surprise celebrity guests, the judges and presenters will be from some of the world's most influential fashion houses and publications.

They will include the editor of British Vogue, Alexandra Shulman, and New York entrepreneur and fashion leader Amy Sacco.

Other judges will be the vice chairman of IMG Models - the world's leading model agency - Alastair Johnston, and Jennifer Uner, who founded the Los Angeles Fashion Awards.


The categories will be Designer of the Year, Textile/Cashmere Designer of the Year, Young Designer/New Talent, Retailer of the Year, Model of the Year, Fashion Communication Award and International Designer of the Year.


There will also be two special awards for entry into the new Scottish Fashion Awards Hall of Fame.

Here are just some Scots stars who have set the fashion world alight with their personal style...


NICOLA BENEDETTI


TEENAGE music star Nicola is always seen in evening dress for her concert performances.


But despite her tender years, the violin virtuoso has already shown exquisite taste. While other young classical stars such as Charlotte Church and Vanessa Mae dressed up in corsets, Nicola, 19, has remained elegant and tasteful.


GERARD BUTLER


THE hunky actor has inspired men and entranced women since hitting the Hollywood big time.


The movie star's style is sharp and masculine. Since starring in the silver screen version of Phantom of the Opera, Gerard Butler has been pictured countless times in well-cut suits.


But the 36-year-old also loves to wear the kilt.


CAROL SMILLIE


CAROL has long since grown out of the big hair and skimpy lingerie she modelled in the Eighties.


The former model and telly girl has also broken away from the plaid shirts and dungarees she wore while presenting Changing Rooms.


Carol, 44, is now more likely to be seen gracing the red carpet in a chic gown or in a well-cut suit.


SHARLEEN SPITERI


TEXAS singer Sharleen has proved she can do rock chic and red-carpet glam with equal ease.


The 38-year-old donned a leather Elvis suit and lambchop sideburns for one of her band's music videos. But mum-of-one Sharleen also displayed her feminine side in a dress for this year's charity Burns Supper, which she co-hosted in London.


ALEX KAPRANOS


FRANZ Ferdinand frontman Alex, 34, captured the art school look so well that he now has an army of lookalikes.


His band adopted the look of indie legend Jarvis Cocker but added their own twist. Droves of male fans on both sides of the Atlantic now strive to emulate the look at their concerts.


LULU


THE Glasgow songstress is an international pop phenomenon after having her first hit in the Sixties.


The tiny star, who has been a pop pin-up for four decades, has softened her famous flame-coloured locks and aged extremely well.


Lulu, 57, has kept in fantastic shape and been seen on the arm of men young enough to be her sons.


ATTA YAQUB


ACTOR Atta, star of Ken Loach's Romeo and Juliet tale, Ae Fond Kiss, sets many hearts racing.


Arelatively new kid on the block, the 25-year-old has attracted a lot of attention for his looks and dress sense and has headed for Hollywood in a bid to make his name there. As a former model, he has a head start in the style stakes.


SHIRLEY MANSON


ROCKgoddess Shirley wasmixing grunge with glamour long before Gwen Stefani came along.


Edinburgh-born Shirley, 39, fronted ads for Calvin Klein as well as leading rock band Garbage.


She also posed with megastars Elton John and Mary J. Blige to promote MAC's Viva Glam lipsticks, which raise funds for AIDS charities.


KIRSTY HUME


MODEL Kirsty's ethereal beauty made her one of the highest paid catwalk queens of the Nineties.


The 27-year-old from Ayr has a Bohemian style which belies her estimated £11million fortune but that look has been her trademark.


Married to Donovan Leitch, she was just out of her teens when she became the face of Chanel.


DARIUS DANESH


THE Popstars reject, now 25, stunned the country with his striking makeover for Pop Idol.


The nation cringed when Darius first appeared on telly with a dodgy goatee and ponytail.


But the following year he reappeared with a clean cut look and Rat Pack-style suits. His legions of fans swooned further when he wore a kilt.


ANNIE LENNOX


THE Eighties pop icon's androgynous style has made her a modern-day Katherine Hepburn.


Cropped haircuts and mannish suits were the 51-year-old Eurythmics singer's trademark.


But, in recent years she has also shown a more graceful, feminine side, dressing in flowing chiffon frocks for premieres and awards ceremonies.


SEAN CONNERY


MOVIE legend Sir Sean remains the greatest James Bond to most 007 fans.


Playing the smoothest film character of all time allowed the 75-year-old to develop a look which men the world over have since tried to emulate.


Even in his later years, the star has continued to dress impeccably.
