JODIE Foster was the name on curious Cardwell residents' lips yesterday as helicopters buzzed overhead in the lead-up to filming of Hollywood movie Nim's Island.
Most of the 130 crew and cast members are expected to converge on the small seaside destination today, and filming will start on Monday at nearby Hinchinbrook Island.
"Everyone's coming in and talking about Jodie Foster," Hinchinbrook Butchery apprentice Callan Ihle told The Weekend Post while he worked on meat orders for the town's newcomers.
Nim's Island stars Oscar winner Jodie Foster, child star Abigail Breslin and Tomb Raider's Gerard Butler.
Filming begins on the fantasy children's adventure movie the same week cameras start to roll off Mission Beach for the $17 million second series of Channel Nine's Sea Patrol.
Nim's Island location manager Gareth Price said the region hadbeenscoured for boats, barges, food suppliers and extras.
Aerial film work had already begun from GBR Cairns helicopters.
Sea Patrol will see the return of actors Lisa McCune and Ian Stenlake to Mission Beach, along with series newcomer Alan Dale.
The cast is spending three weeks in Mission and one week in Cairns, filming at the city's navy base. The Nim's IslandIsland for three weeks. crew will film on Hinchinbrook
"We're feeding about 200 people a day," Cardwell Fresh Fruit and Veg owner Karen Mossop said.
"It's bringing a lot of money and a lot of people into town."
