After the success of “Sin City” back in 2005, fans of renowned graphic novelist Frank Miller have debated what story of his would be brought to life in the silver screen. Internet forums have been flooded with arguments and reactions on whether who would direct and who should be cast in the roles.
Then, Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) stepped up to the plate and grabbed the opportunity to film “300″.
What exactly is the story? The Eisner-winning graphic novel published in 1998 by Dark Horse was inspired by the Battle of Thermopylae. It was in 480 B.C. and was fought between Spartans and Persians. Oh, by the way, that’s 300 Spartan soldiers against a huge number of Persian armies. Talk about being outnumbered.
Gerald Butler (Phantom of the Opera) portrays King Leonidas, who leads the Spartans against the Persian invaders, with Rodrigo Santoro as King Xerxes at the helm. Also figuring heavily in the story are Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo, David Wenham as Dilios, Dominic West as Theron and Tom Wisdom as Astinos.
Early reviews have been soild, with fans already proclaiming it one of the best films so far. Well-known movie buff Harry Knowles even went as far as to put it in among the finest he has seen all year.
The jury is still out when it hits theaters starting this March. Already, the word of mouth is as furious as the war waged hundreds of years ago.
