August 14, 2007 - After weeks of online rumors, it has been confirmed that Len Wiseman is being lined up to direct New Line's remake of the John Carpenter cult classic Escape From New York. Gerard Butler is attached to star as Snake Plissken, the role originally played by Kurt Russell.

The Hollywood Reporter says Wiseman, who directed this summer's Live Free or Die Hard, is in negotiations to helm the remake, which "will combine an origin story for Plissken merged with the story of the 1981 movie."

The new version was scripted by Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down). Neal Moritz is producing via his Original Film company.

Len Wiseman also directed the two Underworld movies.
