One of the strengths of a good DVD is getting to hear the creators -- directors, writers and actors -- articulate what it was they were trying to do.
On that level, the 300: Special Edition DVD deserves credit for rounding up the usual suspects and getting them to talk.
Director Zack Snyder, graphic novelist Frank Miller (also a producer on the film) and stars such as Gerard Butler all weigh in on the film, which is a surreal, exaggerated version of the Battle of Thermopylae.
Some highlights:
Miller: "It's a very, very simplified version of a complex historical event.
Even though it was only a three-day battle, it was a collision of cultures that continues to this day."
Snyder: "What Frank has done is that he has taken an actual event and turned it into mythology... He wanted to get at the essence of what a Spartan is, not at the reality of what a Spartan is."
Butler: "It is a kick-ass story full of passion, politics and brutality existing in this sort of hyper-beautiful, emotional world."
