I see that you already know how to shop in Rio. I saw you here near the Osklen store.

Esta é a minha calça da Osklen, esta é a minha camisa da Osklen. Eu sou uma loja da Osklen ambulante. O que aconteceu foi que a American Airlines perdeu a nossa bagagem. A de todo mundo. Então a gente entrou na loja e eles simplesmente nos deram tudo, o que foi muito amável da parte deles. Eu estava em Londres e nós viajamos via Nova York. Antes nós estávamos em LA e viajamos onze horas até Londres e então para Nova York e depois para cá. E então nós chegamos na alfândega em São Paulo e nossa bagagem tinha sumido e foi aquele inferno e então nós chegamos no Rio, que colocou um sorriso no rosto de todo mundo porque este lugar é muito bonito. Você chega e vê as praias e aquelas belas ilhas...

These are my pants from Osklen, this is my shirt from Osklen. I am a walking Osklan store. What happened was that American Airlines lost our baggage-everyone’s. So we went into the store and they simply gave us everything. It was very kind on their part. I was in London and we flew through New York. Before that, we were in L.A. and we traveled 11 hours to London and then to New York and then we came here. And when we arrived at customs in San Paulo and our luggage had disappeared and it was hot (or hell) there. Then we arrived in Rio and that put a smile on everyone’s face because this place is very beautiful. You come and you see the beaches and the beautiful islands.

Como é estar neste filme que agora é um sucesso tão grande?

How is it to be in this film that now, is a big, huge success?

Muito bom.

Were you hoping for this success?

Não. Quer dizer, eu tinha esperança que o filme fosse muito bem. Eu me lembro lá atrás, quando eu li o roteiro, li os quadrinhos e vi as idéias do Zack, que me senti como se estivesse vendo um segredo e que este filme poderia ser revolucionário e uma coisa tão legal e diferente. E então quando eu assisti o filme ele era muito mais do que eu poderia esperar em todos os aspectos, mas mesmo assim eu só achei que ele poderia ir bem. Eu vi junto ao público e eles adoraram, mas acho que ninguém esperava que fosse ser algo tão grande. Ele parece mexer com algo que é maior que nós, que é maior que o próprio filme, e o mais interessante é como as pessoas estão reagindo a isto. Eu recebi uma carta de um cara dizendo que assistiu o filme em Savannah, Georgia, e o filme foi aplaudido de pé. Ele disse que nunca viu algo assim, ás vezes parece que alguns filmes simplesmente empolgam as pessoas.

No. You can say that I had hope that the film would go well. I remember back when I read the script, read the graphic novel, and saw Zack’s ideas, that made me feel like I was viewing a secret and that this film would be a revolution and a cool and different thing. And then, when I watched the film, it was a lot more than I could ever hope for in all aspects, but at the same time I only thought that it would go well. I saw it together with an audience and they loved it, but I think that no one expected that it was going to be that big. It seems to work with something that is bigger than us; that is bigger than the film itself, and more interesting is that people are reacting to this. I received a letter from a guy saying that when he watched the film in Savannah, Georgia, the film received a standing ovation. He said that he had never seen anything like this. At times, it seems that some films simply excite people.

Qual é a sensação de ser o nome mais quente em Hollywood agora?

What does it feel like to be a hot name in Hollywood right now?

Eu não sei se sou o nome mais quente agora.

I don’t know if my name is that hot right now.

Nós temos lido um bocado de coisas sobre você na internet.

We have read quite a bit of things about you on the internet.

Eu não posso responder essa pergunta porque fica parecendo que eu acho que sou o nome mais quente em Hollywood (risos). Eu com certeza percebi muitas mudanças muito rapidamente em termos de carreira. E é bom, mas eu não sei se é sorte eu sentir que não tive a chance para absorver isto tudo, porque tudo aconteceu naquele final de semana e na terça-feira eu já estava no avião para Londres, onde não aconteceu ainda, e agora eu estou aqui, e eu não vou estar mais aqui quando acontecer por aqui. Então eu acho que o processo de absorver isto tudo vai levar mais algum tempo, mas isto é bom porque se ficasse muito grande muito depressa eu ia acabar me deixando levar.

I can’t respond to that question because it would make it seem that I think that I am a hot name in Hollywood (laughs). I am certain that I’ve seen many rapid changes in the terms of my career. It’s good, but I don’t know if it is luck. I feel that I haven’t had a chance to absorb everything, because of what happened last weekend. And Tuesday, I was just on the plane to London, where it hadn’t happened yet, and now I am here and I am not going to be here when it happens here. So I think that the process of absorbing all this is going to take some more time, but this is good because if it was very big, very fast, I would be finished, leaving me to be carried along.

Fale um pouco sobre se tornar um ícone para os fãs de quadrinhos.

Talk a little about becoming an icon for comic fans.

Eu tive de lidar com este tipo de coisa antes, em termos de atuar em algo que te traz alto risco porque você se expõe em um papel que pode trazer muitas críticas ou elogios. Então você na pode se prender muito às críticas, da mesma forma que você não pode se prender muito aos elogios. É óbvio que você agradece os elogios, mas se você só ouvir isso e não as críticas você fica com medo de ficar uma coisa meio desequilibrada. É mais uma coisa de o quer que aconteça, é isso mesmo e assunto encerrado. Eu queria fazer este personagem porque o que eu fizesse não significaria nada em vista de Zack Snider, que é a mente por trás do trabalho. Mas por outro lado, também não seria nada se não fosse pelo meu trabalho e de todo o elenco. Nada disso não significaria nada se não fosse pelo trabalho de todo mundo, o que é uma coisa muito legal porque o filme é sobre isso. Sobre nenhum homem conseguir sobreviver por si só, que é preciso um trabalho de equipe, que cada espartano é um elemento essencial e que se um só falhar tudo se estilhaça. Se Zack tivesse falhado eu não estaria sentado aqui e se eu tivesse falhado o Zack não estaria sentado aqui. A gente devia ter falhado para não ter de dar tantas entrevistas (risos).

I had to deal with this type of thing before, in terms of playing something that brings high risks to you because you expose yourself in a role that can bring a lot of criticism or praise. So you can’t bind yourself too much to the criticism and at the same time, you can’t bind yourself too much to the compliments. It’s obvious that you appreciate the compliments, but if you only hear those and not the criticism, you can become frightened to stay in a thing, half-balanced. It’s a thing you want to happen exactly and closed subject. I wanted to do this character because what I did wouldn't mean anything in Zack Snyder’s view, the mind behind the work. But on the other hand, it also would be nothing if it weren’t for my work and the work of the complete cast. Nothing would matter if it wasn’t for the work of everyone, which is a very cool thing because the film is about that..about no man being able to survive for by himself, that teamwork is necessary, that each Spartan is an essential element and that if only one fails, everything shatters. If Zack had failed, I would not be sitting down here and I had failed the Zack would not be sitting down here. People should have failed for not having to give so many interviews (laughs).

Você vai ser o Snake Plisken, certo? É verdade sobre “Fuga de Nova York”? Está confirmado?

You are going to be Snake Plissken, right? Is it true about, “Escape from New York?” Is it confirmed?

Está confirmado, mas é claro que ainda depende de encontrar o roteiro e o diretor certos. Eu adoro a idéia, mas isto está longe ainda. Vai ser pelo menos muitos meses ou um ano até nós sentarmos para discutir o projeto. Mas é uma grande idéia. Se a gente faz isso direito pode ser outro filme muito legal e muito diferente. Eu não faria se não achasse que possa ser algo diferente e desafiador.

It is confirmed, but it’s clear that it yet depends on finding the right script and the right director. I love the idea, but it’s going to be a while yet. It’s going to be at least more months or a year until we sit to discuss the project. But it’s a great idea. If the people make it right, it can be another very cool and very different movie. I would not make it if I didn’t think it could be something different and challenging.

Então não é um remake?

So, it’s not a remake?

É um remake no sentido de “Fuga de Nova York” de John Carpenter, mas ao mesmo tempo é uma nova visualização de toda a coisa. Eu acho que vai ser igual nos elementos básicos, mas dentro destes limites vai ser muito diferente.

It’s a remake in the sense that it’s John Carpenters’ “Escape from New York” but at the same time is a new visualization of everything. I think that it is going to be equal in the basic elements, but inside these limits, it’s going to be very different.

Você falou com Kurt Russell sobre isso?

Have you spoken to Kurt Russell about this?

Não. Ainda não. Tudo aconteceu muito rápido e eu ainda não sei se quero conversar com Kurt Russell sobre isso. Quer dizer, ele é um dos meus atores favoritos e ele em “O Enigma do Outro Mundo”, do John Carpenter... Bom, “O Enigma do Outro Mundo” é um dos meus filmes favoritos. Mas eu quero que este seja o meu Snake Plisken. Eu não conversei com o Russell Crowe antes de fazer este papel. Conversar com as pessoas só vai te fazer virar uma versão pior do que eles já fizeram. E eu não quero fazer isso.

No, not yet. Everything happened so fast and I still don’t know if I want to talk with Kurt Russell about it. You know, he is one of my favorite actors and he, in John Carpenter’s, “The Thing”…well, “The Thing” is one of my favorite films. But I want that this be my Snake Plissken. I didn’t talk to Russell Crowe before I played this role. Talking with people is only going to make you turn a worse version than the ones that were done before. I don’t want to do that.

Há várias discussões sobre o conteúdo político de “300”, especialmente em relação à situação do Oriente Médio. Na sua perspectiva, que fez um rei que é também um herói, como você definiria o seu Leonidas?

There are various discussion about the political content of 300, especially in relation to the situation in the Middle East. In your perspective, playing the king, who is also a hero, how would you define your Leonidas?

Sabe, isso é algo que você é que tem de decidir. Nós sabíamos que estávamos entrando em um território perigoso. Eu sabia que os paralelos que eu tivesse que traçar seriam de natureza mais pessoal, dentro da minha cabeça e pensando no que o meu povo, o povo escocês, passou. Mas eu não iria colocar em um contexto moderno porque, pra falar a verdade, isso é bobagem. Não seria isso que me daria o sabor ou o fogo que eu preciso. As pessoas ficam dizendo que o filme faz uma afirmação política, mas tem gente que diz o mesmo, mas de forma totalmente oposta. Quer dizer, quem eles dizem que é o Bush, ou melhor, quem eles dizem que são os EUA e quem eles dizem que é o Iraque estão trocados. Dá pra argumentar nos dois sentidos. Então fica difícil dizer que nós estávamos fazendo uma afirmação política quando as pessoas dizem coisas opostas. Mas isto é legal porque põe as pessoas para discutir a situação atual, mas esta não foi a nossa intenção.

You know, this is something that you are going to have to decide. We knew that we were stepping in dangerous territory. I knew that the parallels that I had that traced would be of a very personal nature inside my head and thinking what my own people, the Scots, went through. But I wouldn’t put it in the modern context, because to talk about it is silliness. It would not be this that would give the flavor or the fire that I need. People are saying that this film has a political assertion; there are others who have said the same, but in a way that is entirely different. You know, there are those who say it’s Bush, or better yet, they say that it’s the US, and there are those who say it’s Iraq and they are changed. It gives the argument to the two meanings. So it’s difficult to say that we are making a political assertion when people are saying opposite things. But this is cool because puts people to discuss the present situation, but this was not to our intention.

Como é sair de “Fantasma da Ópera” para senhor da guerra? Em “O Fantasma da Ópera” mal dava para ver o seu rosto e neste filme há toda uma coisa física. Como foi a preparação? Foi muito difícil?

How is it to go from “The Phantom of the Opera” to a man of war? In “Phantom” evil gave to see your face and in this film it’s all a physical thing. How was the preparation? Was it difficult?

Foi muito difícil... ele acabou de me fazer quatro perguntas de uma vez (risos). O treinamento para isto foi muito, muito difícil. Foram oito meses de alimentação controlada e me exercitando às vezes seis horas por dia e malhando no set. E eu tinha dois preparadores físicos e os dublês... foi muito extremo e eu sofri muito por causa disso após as filmagens. No “Fantasma” era diferente, havia o treinamento de canto e eu assumi aquela responsabilidade em tempo integral, quer dizer, eu já estava cantando ás 7:30 e ia ao estúdio e fazia ensaios. Eu cantava em todo o lugar que eu podia. Parece uma obsessão, mas eu estou acostumado a interpretar personagens obsessivos, então funciona. O Fantasma para mim foi uma coisa muito mais emocional, como um grito primitivo, eu sentia essas emoções tão profundas e obscuras que eu tentava descrever para as pessoas como se aquilo não viesse de mim, porque era algo que vinha tão de baixo que era muito assustador. E sentir isso por meses foi uma experiência e tanto. Interpretar o Fantasma foi uma coisa linda, mas ao mesmo tempo foi muito negra e perigosa de certa forma. E agora neste papel é como se tudo que eu senti no Fantasma se reduzisse a um ponto minúsculo, no centro de tudo. E eu me senti tão forte, tão focado e invencível que parecia um laser apontando para a frente, quase como o oposto. Mas ambos os papéis necessitaram de muito trabalho. Este último foi mais doloroso. Sem entrar muito nos detalhes, algumas coisas eu decidi imediatamente sobre o Rei, em termos de postura e em termos corporais. O jeito como ele se movia e o jeito como ele se expressava, a intensidade do olhar... e então você constrói tudo a partir daí, deste esqueleto, como se fosse a carne sobre os ossos. E é engraçado porque eu tinha esquecido estas decisões então quando eu assisti o filme eu ficava pensando “uau, mas que voz grave eu tinha aí!”. Ás vezes eu estou vendo as imagens do filme e eu me vejo com os ombros para trás e toda aquela postura e eu percebo como eu estava apreciando toda aquela força e poder. É meio que um choque ver tudo junto, as coisas que eu fiz como o Rei e aquele olhar e pensar “fui eu que fiz isso?”. Eu amo quando eu mal posso me reconhecer. A mesma coisa com o Fantasma. São caras que você realmente tem de sair do lugar para interpretá-los. Quando eu fiz "Átila, o Huno", eu tive um sonho pouco depois das filmagens em que eu estava observando Átila, observando ele, mas eu estava vendo a mim mesmo. Era o meu rosto que eu via, mas no sonho eu não tinha a sensação de que aquele era eu. Depois que eu acordei eu devo dizer que me senti muito satisfeito.

It was very difficult…he just finished me off with four questions at once (laughs). The training for this was very, very difficult. For 8 months, I had a controlled diet and I exercised 6 hours per day and worked out on set. I had two physical trainers and doubles …it was very extreme and I suffered a lot after filming. In “Phantom” it was different, having singing lessons. And I assumed that responsibility full time, to say, I was already singing at 7:30 am and I was already at the studio and making attempts. I sang in all the places I could. It seemed like an obsession, but I am accustomed to playing obsessive characters and it worked. The Phantom for me was a very emotional thing, like primitive yelling. I felt these very deep and dark emotions that I had tried to describe to these people who hadn’t seen me, because it was something that came from so low that was very frightening. To feel this for months was an experience and so much more. To play the Phantom was a beautiful thing, but at the same time it was very dark and dangerous to a certain degree. And now, in this role, it’s as if what I felt in Phantom was reduced to a tiny point, in the center of everything. And I felt so strong, so focused, and invincible that it seemed like a laser pointing to the front, almost as an opposite. But both roles required a lot of work. This last was most painful. Without going into much detail, there were some things I immediately decided about the king, in terms of posture and body. The way that he moves and that way that he expresses himself, the intensity of his look, then you construct everything from there, from this skeleton, as it was itself the meat on the bones. And it was funny because I had forgotten those decisions when I watched the movie. I kept thinking, “Wow, but that serious voice I had there…” At times, I am seeing the images of the film and I see myself with the shoulders out to here, and that posture and I saw that I was appreciating all that strength and power. It was half a shock to see everything together, the things that I did as king and that look and think, “Was that me who did that?” I love when I can barely recognize myself. Same thing with the Phantom. Those are guys that you really have to leave the place to play them. When I played, “Attila the Hun”, I had a dream soon after filming, in which I was watching Attila, observing him, but I was seeing myself. It was my face that I saw, but in my dream, I didn’t have the sensation that he was me. After I woke up, I must say that I was very satisfied.

Além da Graphic Novel, houve outra fonte de pesquisa para a criação de Leonidas?

Aside from the graphic novel, did you have another source of research to create Leonidas?

Sim. Tinha os quadrinhos, mas eu também vi dois documentários bem longos sobre os espartanos, além de muita literatura sobre os espartanos, o período da História em que viveram os espartanos e as Termópilas... Mas para ser completamente honesto, o contato mais direto foi entre eu, a HQ e Zack.

Yes. I had the comic book, but I also saw two long documentaries about the Spartans, aside from lots of literature about the Spartans, the period of history when the Spartans lived and Thermopylae. But to be completely honest, the most direct contact was between me, the graphic novel and Zack.

Você leu alguma outra coisa do Frank Miller?

Did you read anything else by Frank Miller?

Depois de “300”? Eu li “Sin City”, quer dizer, eu li o resto do “Sin City” e eu saí uma noite com ele quando a gente conversou sobre possíveis trabalhos futuros, a gente nunca sabe, e ele me mandou as coisas todas dele, que são muitas. Mas eu estou na estrada deste então e tentando ler uns 25 roteiros, sendo que não sou dos leitores mais rápidos, e ainda tentando ler uns 4 livros além dos roteiros. Então... não.

After “300”? I read “Sin City, to say, I read the rest of “Sin City” and I went out one night with him when we talked about working together in the future. I didn’t know anything and he sent me all these things-there were a lot of things. But I am on the road now and trying to read 25 scripts and I’m not a fast reader, and yet I am trying to read 4 books along with the scripts. So…no.

Zack vai fazer “Watchemen”. Você pode nos dar algum detalhe?

Zack is going to make “Watchmen”. Can you give us any details?

Você se vê como algum personagem da revista?

Are you going to be someone from the comic book?

Eu não vou falar nada sobre isso.

Como foi a sua relação com Rodrigo Santoro nos sets?

How was your relationship with Rodrigo Santoro on the sets?

Ele chegou no meio das filmagens e foi difícil para ele porque todo mundo já estava junto há um bom tempo e ele ainda tinha de fazer um papel muito diferente, então eu não tive nenhuma vontade de estar no lugar dele. Mas nós nos demos bem logo de cara e conversamos muito, mas muito mesmo, e saímos e nos divertimos... ele é um cara ótimo e eu devo dizer que o trabalho dele neste filme é fenomenal. Teria sido muito mais fácil correr menos riscos e pegar mais leve no papel, mas ele realmente foi tão longe quanto precisava para criar um Xerxes tão extremo quanto todo o resto do filme. E ele chegou mesmo lá. Ele é um grande cara. Verdade! Sabem aquelas pessoas que a gente fica amigo logo de cara, que estão em fases similares à sua, têm a mesma visão que você sobre as coisas? Eu ficava pensando que a gente não devia ter conversado tanto, já que nós éramos para ser arquiinimigos (risos).

He arrived in the middle of filming and it was difficult for him because everyone had already been together, having a good time and he had to do his role very differently. I didn’t have any will to be in his place. But we got along very well and we talked a lot. Even more so, we went out and had fun. He is a great guy and I must say that his work in this film is phenomenal. It would have been much easier to run less risks and to make light of the role, but he really was so out there as much as was necessary to create Xerxes- so extreme as much as the rest of the film. And he did it! He is a great guy. Really! Do people know that when people stay friends right away, that there are in similar phases with you, that they have the same vision as you have about things? I kept thinking that we shouldn’t have talked so much, because we are supposed to be arch-enemies (laughs).
